Stained White Oak Black

Black Stain Resand

Project Type: Existing Resand + Stain
Duration: 4 Days
Scope: Sand, Stain, and Seal existing White Oak floor.
Project Location: West Linn, Oregon
Material: 4″ White Oak common grade

A client had just recently purchased a ranch house on acreage in West Linn, OR. While doing updates to the house they decided to change the color of their existing white oak floor. The designer, Alison Van Delden from Garrison Hullinger Design specified the new color to be black. White oak is very difficult to stain black due to some non porous sections of the wood. The stain just does not sink it which results in a blotchy color with lots of variations. After about a week of mixing stains and pigments I finally came up with the darkest stain combination that I’ve ever seen. Needless to say, I’m very pleased with the way this floor turned out!

Maple Select

Maple Sand & Seal

Maple 1st Grade

Project Type: Existing Resand
Duration: 3 Days
Scope: Sand and seal 1,140 /sf of existing maple floor.
Project Location: Lake Oswego, Oregon
Material: 2.25″ Maple 1st Grade

This project came as a referral to us from one of our builder clients. Here the homeowner hired a not so professional hardwood floor guy before we came on board. Needless to say, he screwed up the job. For some reason he thought that you can spot sand and patch a floor and still make the finish look uniform. Unfortunately that was not the case and the floor was beyond spot repair. We came in and sanded the entire area to raw wood and sealed it with Pallmann Build and 2 layers of Pallman 96. This is a water based sealer that has excellent leveling capability. Not to brag but once we finished, the floor looked fantastic!

Random Width Walnut

Reclaimed Walnut Floor

Project Type: Remodel
Duration: 2 Days
Scope: Install 260 /sf of hardwood and screen + coat
Project Location: Portland, Oregon
Material: Random Width Walnut Floor

On this project we installed some beautiful random width hardwood floor and screen it with an extra coat of sealer. The sealer was water based Glitsa Infinity II Satin. Project took only two days to complete. We tore out some existing hardwood floor with particle board in kitchen and replaced it with this beautiful hardwood floor.

Everything in this house is either reclaimed or antique.

Reclaimed Fir Hardwood Floor

Project Type: Complete Remodel
Duration: 7 Days
Scope: 1,500 /sf of installation + stair case
Project Location: Portland, Oregon
Material: Custom Reclaimed Random Width Fir

Russ from RJR Construction has asked us to install this very unique floor. The material is a reclaimed fir with random widths. The biggest challenge was extra long planks. Some were coming in at 18 feet in length! This created some logistical challenges as far as maneuverability and product placement. We also installed some reclaimed French Oak parquet. Once we finished and stood back we marveled on how everything came together. Props to Russ from RJR Construction for completing such a complicated project in record time! Beyond any doubt, this one is for the books!

Maple Bronze Dining

Maple Bronze

Project Type: New Construction
Duration: 2 Days
Scope: 1,100 /sf of new installation
Project Location: Portland, Oregon
Material: Maple Bronze Solid 5″

On this project we had another opportunity to install one of our most popular solid hardwoods. After installing this product for Grove Development in the past, they decided to install it on this project. I personally find it striking on how this product highlights the white cabinetry around it. This quality product is easy to install and the boards come straight when you pull them out of the box. It is also very important to let this wood acclimate before installation.

Arrival of Carpet!

Over the years many of you have heard me hating on carpet. A lot of carpet products out there are extremely hazardous to your health and are manufactured utilizing substandard products. However, about 6 months ago we had an opportunity to meet with a rep from Royalty Carpets. After looking at their product lines and picking his brain regarding the manufacturing process in their California facility, we realized that we have a winner! Keep your eyes peeled for new carpet products and services that we will offer.

Maple Bronze Hand Scraped Hardwood Floor

Maple Brandy

Project Type: New Construction
Duration: 5 Days
Scope: 3,400 /sf + staircase
Project Location: Portland, Oregon
Material: Maple Bronze Solid 5″

On this project we had an excellent opportunity to install another solid handscraped maple hardwood floor. This particular product comes in 5″ wide planks and has a considerable amount of knots. Another interesting feature of this particular hardwood floor is the stain color. Maple is a very dense hardwood floor which makes it very difficult to stain. The manufacturer of this product was able to create a very consistent look on the color without the “blotching” effect that you see with most stain on-site hardwood floors. This project is also a fine example of how you can utilize the hardwood floor planks on steps without using solid treads. Special thanks goes to the builder Grove Hunt from Grove Development, Inc.

Strand Bamboo Flooring in Portland, OR

Project Type: New Installation
Project Duration: 2 Days
Project Location: Portland, Oregon – American Plaza Towers
Material: Petrified Strand Eucalyptus Sandstone

For this particular project we had a unique opportunity to do work on a highrise. While working in a large building like this has its challenges we were quickly able to adapt and meet them. Having to coordinate the mobilization of tools and materials has its kinks but with the help of an intuitive crew we were able to get this job done in record time. The floor we installed was provided by SimpleFloors. This particular version of strand bamboo flooring  is extremely durable and has unique character which you rarely find in most strand bamboo floors.

Roman does a TV interview

Roman got quite a surprise a couple of days ago when KATU news decided to stop in and do an interview. Roman was installing some strand bamboo hardwood flooring in Camas, WA when some unexpected visitors showed up. Apparently, KATU news was doing a piece on the recovering economy in Southwest Washington. They were driving back from taping their main interview and saw our tools setup outside. This gave them the cue to com in. Camas has a large development going on Prune Hill so the KATU people thought it would be a great place to film some construction action! White Oak Select 2-1/4" Hardwood Floor

White Oak Select Grade

Project Type: Re-sand
Project Duration: 4 days
Project Location: New Berg, OR
Material: 2-1/4? White Oak Select Grade
Client: Elite Development NW

On this project we sanded and sealed some existing 2-1/4″ White Oak select grade hardwood floors. We applied a alcohol based sealer which will allow the oak to gradually “age” and take on a more yellow color with time. Typically we would apply a non-aging sealer which can be an option but half the house was not being sanded. Considering that matching to existing oak was a priority, we applied an aging sealer.
